Generally, the faster plants grow the more food and water they need. Most orchids are slow growers so be patient and give them proper care. Avoid overfertilizing and overwatering.

Most orchid types are epiphytes, meaning they grow best in soilless mixtures. A few orchids, including Paphiopedilum and Cymbidium, need to be planted in a soil mixture for nourishment.

Like other blooming plants, orchids require abundant bright, filtered light. A southern exposure is usually best.

Add 1/4 teaspoon per gallon of lukewarm water every time you water (cold water may shock your orchids.) For feeding less often, once or twice a month, use 1/2 teaspoon per gallon of water.
